Classical Chinese Acupuncture is an essential modality for healing, and provides key advantages over modern methods by virtue of the extensive and powerful knowledge contained within the Chinese medical tradition. A knowledge of the Acupuncture Meridians and points gives a practitioner the ability to control, regulate and treat many conditions quickly and effectively. It’s like having access to the control panel that governs your health.

Do Our Acupuncture Needles Nurt?

Not really. At our Aldergrove acupuncture clinic, in general, the needle sensation is minimized by using only new, once use needles, and high quality brands such as Seirin and Tewa. The grade of the needle makes a huge difference to the sensation because the higher quality the needle, the smoother the surface is at a microscopic level, see this link to Seirin’s website.

A needle with a silicone coating is also much more comfortable than one without silicone coating, and glides much more smoothly, minimizing sensation. The next major factor is the practitioner’s experience level and technique. Because the needles are flexible, a fine touch is needed to help the needle enter the acupuncture point comfortably. Keeping a flexible needle relatively straight so that the pressure on the surrounding tissue is minimal takes practice, but is one the the key ways to keep acupuncture comfortable for the patient!

Once the needle has been introduced into the acupuncture point, some light stimulation takes place in order to produce a mild, heavy sensation. There may be a light aching, warmth, or pressure. These sensations are normal and are a positive indication that the needles are producing a therapeutic effect.

A good rule of thumb for needle sensation is that it should be noticeable, but mild enough that the patient could nap through the treatment once the needles are in. They should not be irritating or painful.
